Hello and Happy September!
This is the sunrise view from my Mill Valley home, something I have never seen before...If you know me you know that I AM NOT a morning person. Since returning from Paris, I haven't slept past 6AM in about a week and I have to admit I have a new appreciation for the extra hours in my day!

Now that summer is wrapping up for most of the country, true Marinites know OUR best days of summer sunshine are just ahead...September and October are Bay Area's official 'summer' months - and with interest rates expected to continue dropping, it's also a great time to buy in Marin.

It's time to celebrate and boast about our sweet spot in the Bay on two fronts:

1) Smart Asset, a start-up financial advisor company, has chosen Marin County as this year's #1 retirement county in all of California! Their analysis is based on economic factors like tax burdens, the senior population, and the number of medical and recreation centers, and retirement communities per 1,000 people.

Here's the complete list of counties:

  1. Marin

  2. San Luis Obispo

  3. Placer

  4. Tuolumne

  5. Nevada

  6. Shasta

  7. Amador

  8. Orange

  9. Ventura

  10. El Dorado

2) Mill Valley was recently featured on local FOX affiliate - KTVU - for an entire hour! Treat yourself to their live (now taped), remote reporting from favorite spots The Depot, Mill Valley Lumber Yard, Sweetwater and a slew of eateries and businesses you're sure to recognize.

JAZZ MAFIA'S GRATEFUL BRASS + DJ DARKSTAR DAN |  SEPT. 21

Calling all you Deadheads.
We're stretching just a tad outside Marin - to Point San Pablo Harbor - at the foot of the San Rafael/Richmond bridge with this week's pick because it delivers on all marks!

The outdoor event promises great music from Grateful Brass - Grateful Dead reimagined with an instrumentation of brass, drums and vocals (no guitar!) - in an eclectic, lawn setting with tasty pies and brews from neighbor restaurant, Sailing Goat. Bring blankets, lawn chairs and your 16 year olds and under, they're FREE!

Parking is uber-limited for this special event; we have two extra spots if you want to carpool with us!

During the early days of the Pandemic, we were thrilled when Chris and Miranda (Calvi Bros. Seafood) who sold exclusively to restaurants redirected their fish sales direct to consumers during our stay-at-home status. Michael would spend hours scaling, deboning, filleting pounds and pounds of local King Salmon and Halibut to last all winter.

I still dream of living in a community where I can shop like a European, on foot or bike, establishing relationships and purchasing directly from each specialist: Fishmonger, Cheesemonger, Butcher, Bakery, Produce. Think Hopkins Street or Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley. I'm still surprised no one in Marin has jumped into this arena. There are certainly barriers to entry - commercial rents, space, permits, costs etc - but I'm holding out hope.

Until then, we are lucky to have Patrick & Don - two local fishmongers who deliver weekly to your front doorm both the local catch - think Halibut, Albacore, Uni, Sand Dabs, Petrale, and three types of Cod - and less local, such as Trout, Scallops, Squid and multiple Salmon options.

Bon Appetit!

The Tool Shed will resume in Issue #5 as Michael has been in the desert for a few weeks.
In the meantime, please make Frankie's acquaintance; We enjoyed a stunning, summer Labor Day at Stinson. This four-year-old Puggle is our favorite child now that we're empty nesters. Frankie came to us about 3 years ago by way of the Kern Project; I'll be featuring the local nonprofit in the next issue.
